AFNE Supports NEPATSG's Patients and Their CEO
Since NEPATSG was incorporated in 1998, Angel Flight has helped us fly our members to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) for their organ transplants and follow visits.  On a personal note, when in 2006 I received news that I was placed back on the liver transplant waiting list, due to Hepatic Artery Thrombosis, Angel Flight was there for my several trips back and forth to UPMC.  I experienced first hand how important their service was to me and my family.  With all the stress involved with the organ transplant process, we didn't have the added worry about the cost of  that transportation to the hospital!  I truly believe those pilots that volunteer their plane, time and fuel are the "Lone Rangers of The Sky".  God Bless, Angel Flight  and the pilots in making this organization what it is today. I don't know what we would do without them!  On April 2, 2008, I received my second liver transplant and the staff at Angel Flight NE was there to help get me and my wife back home.

Lexie Flying to Boston…with Angel Flight

Take a Moment to Hear Lexie's story - One of the most adorable little girls you could ever meet.  Her mom, Beverly, says "My whole family gives all of our thanks to them. Everyone at Angel Flight has gone above and beyond.  It's really a blessing."

She is just one of the thousands that Angel Flight Northeast helps annually to get the medical care they need.

When Kyle needed to say "Hello Columbus", Angel Flight Northeast got him there

A Note from Kyle's Mom:

On March 4th, I reached out to Angel Flight Northeast explaining Kyle’s situation and the urgency in getting him transported to Columbus. Less than 24 hours later, Angel Flight Northeast's mission coordination team responded that they had a plane and pilots who volunteered to fly Kyle, my husband and I round trip at no cost to the appointment.

There was so much to worry about on that trip. But the one sure thing was that Angel Flight Northeast was there when we needed them at the most desperate of times and took care of getting us there and home safely. Having peace of mind that Angel Flight pilots were there to help us with our journey allowed me to focus on Kyle and his evaluation by the doctors.

I don’t know what we would have done without Angel Flight Northeast.

A Note from Joe's Dad, Dennis

Thumbs Up Says It All
Joe enjoying his Angel Flight to Children's Hospital in Boston.

Every time I think of Angel Flight Northeast, I think of how grateful we are that you do what you do.

When we were both mentally and financially exhausted and had lost all hope that we could get our son, Joe, the care he needed, Angel Flight Northeast came to our rescue. They not only made Joe feel special, but without their help, we could not have been able to get him the care he needed. With their help and that of the doctor’s, we have been able to get his 100+ seizures a day under control. As a father, you feel the responsibility of making sure you get your children help when they need it. We were loosing all hope until Angel Flight Northeast came into our lives. You will always have a large spot in our hearts and your pilots should know how important they are and the contribution they make to so many lives.

Patient: 4 year old Kyle

Kyle's closeupWhen four year old Kyle travels with Angel Flight™ he is accompanied by his mom and his buddy, Junior. As a matter of fact, Kyle does not leave home without him. Junior is not a younger brother and he is not a pet of some sort, he is Kyle’s new kidney. While the kidney is new to Kyle, it is actually 34 years old. That is because Kyle’s kidney once belonged to his dad. Too big to fit where Kyle’s other kidneys once lived, Kyle’s doctors made a home for Junior in Kyle’s abdomen.

When Kyle was two years old he was diagnosed with kidney cancer, which is a rare occurrence in someone as young as Kyle. After surgery, chemotherapy and dialysis, both kidneys called it quits. Kyle was going to need a kidney transplant.

Once the transplant was complete, the question became: how were Kyle and his mom going to get from Rochester, New York to Boston, Massachusetts for his very time sensitive tests each week in Boston? These tests start very early in the morning and don’t end until early afternoon - tests that would make sure that Junior was getting along with his new surroundings that his cancer was gone and that everything was functioning properly.

Traveling by car for Kyle and Junior would not be an option. The weekly 14-hour round-trip car rides would be exhausting for both he and his mother, and extremely uncomfortable for a four year old who only three months ago had a kidney transplant and who recently learned how to walk. Commercial air travel would not be an option either. Weekly round-trip tickets for two for an indefinite amount of time would not only exhaust a family financially but would be unhealthy for Kyle’s immune system: too many people with too many germs.

Kyle takes great care of Junior; he waters him often by drinking 2½ liters of water a day and he tries to protect him by using hand sanitizer and other precautions to prevent him from catching a bug. Kyle’s kidney is high maintenance. He will forever fight his new surroundings. Therefore, Kyle needs to take special medication to ensure that his body will keep Junior happy; medications that make Kyle much more susceptible to viruses and disease.

Kyle has been traveling with Angel Flight since August and is doing very well.

"Angel Flight provides us not just flights but the ability to see our son's medical providers in a timely manner. Angel Flight pilots are not just pilots but responsible, caring individuals who donate their personal time and airplanes while keeping safety as one of their top priorities for my family. And Angel Flight allows my family more time so that we can be together, AT HOME, as a family," says Kyle's mom.
